Who are National Highways?
National Highways is a government company that plans, designs, builds, operates, and maintains England’s motorways and major A roads, and at Ritherdon, we are proud to call ourselves National Highways-approved manufacturers.
Our National Highways Range:
National Highways 609N (NH609):
The NH609 range is incredibly popular, being used on main motorways including the M6, and even as part of the National Highways ESS Weather Station replacement project.
Tested to NH standards, the 609N is designed to prevent electrical equipment from being damaged by road conditions, including water, dirt, and vibration, possessing an IP56 IP rating, and a 25U 19″ Rack allowing for up to 50kg of roadside equipment to be installed within the cabinet.
The NH609 follows the National Highways TR 1188 N specification document and has a 4003 stainless steel construction meaning it can be installed inland and coastally. It also comes with the Ritherdon 25 year guarantee.
National Highways Type 640 (NH640):
The NH640, (Formerly National Highways 600C) comes standard with a PDU that contains only one MS4 circuit, meaning the cabinet can be used for any purpose, from street lighting to CCTV, by using Adaption Kits, that the customer can purchase depending on their need, making NH640s extremely versatile.
We have manufactured two different styles of PDU for various functions: Rural and Gantry.
Our Rural PDU is almost exclusively at ELV (Extra Low-Voltage) and is meant for smaller electronic equipment, i.e. post-mounted signals and mast-mounted CCTV.
The Gantry PDU contains more equipment inside and distributes main power to final circuits, including lane signals, speed enforcement equipment, and sign lighting. (recommended for bigger electricals).
National Highways 600 Cabinet (NH600):
Our first National Highways-approved Cabinet, we created the NH600 to National Highways specification for installing roadside equipment.
The NH600 provides a temperature-controlled environment, so internal electronics can function in optimum conditions, with two doors opening at 90 degrees for easy front and rear access.
Because of our rigorous testing, the NH600 has been approved for use on the Strategic Roads Network, Motorway Trunk Roads Network, and the Non-Motorway Roads Network, making it a versatile product.
National Highways Roadside Electrical Cabinet (NHREC) and Ritherdon Passively Safe Cabinet:
The Ritherdon NHREC and the Ritherdon Passively Safe Cabinet are two cabinets created to house electrical components in harsh environments.
The Passively Safe Cabinet minimizes damage from roadside collisions by having a base designed to detach upon collision, preventing damage to any vehicles and cabinet electronics.
The cabinet itself was designed by Ritherdon and has been approved for usage by National Highways Networks.
The NHREC meets all the requirements outlined in National Highways specification MCE 2650, possessing IP56 and IK10 Ratings, meaning it is well protected against dust and water but also resistant to impact energy of up to 20J.
National Highways Cabinet Pedestal Standoff Base:
The National Highways Pedestals are usually sold with the NH640 Cabinet and assist with guiding cables into the cabinet, whilst preventing moisture ingress and gas build-up from the ground.
The Pedestal comes in two different types, Grillage and Chamber. Grillage being able to be installed onto a Plinth (Extended 610 Plinth – source separately) and chamber for an underground install.
Grillage and Chamber pedestal variants are available for NH600 and NH640 cabinets however NH600 Cabinets are only available with the Chamber Pedestal.
